It's
about a one-hour ride for guests of
Wachtelhof
who are picked up from any of these airports by the house's private limo, a BMW
750 IL. Driving up to the main entrance was an experience in itself as we
passed through the most charming, historic little market town of Rotenburg,
while the hotel's woodland backside is bordering on a nature reserve with a
river for fishing and leisure activities. While I was professionally
acknowledged and checked-in, the actual welcome was handled personally by the
managing director on duty, a member of the Höhn family enterprise. My
overall first impression was the one of rustic elegance, lean timber and taste.
I felt at home.
I slipped into my ludicrously luxurious, lonely bathrobe
and matching slippers - took the elevator down to the spa and jumped into the
well-tempered free-form pool with waterfalls that allowed me to swim laps. It
was my intention to rest on one of the heated lounges at the pool just for a
moment or two but a pre-arranged 'Reflexology Massage' of the feet by therapist
Dieter Kemnade was in store for me... |

John Lomitola's Fall Wine-Review: |
|
It is
amazing to reflect on how the wines of Long Island have continued to accumulate
awards and accolades throughout the industry, since they only sprang into
existence around thirty years ago. In particular the
Martha
Clara Vineyards has been making waves for the past eleven years since
proprietor Robert Entenmann of 'crumb-cake' fame caught the wine bug and
planted his first 100+ acres to cast his lot with the rest of his fellow
enologists.

The
Höhns family had a vision, which was to create an oasis of perfection and
tranquility in an ideal place not far from the business centers of Hamburg,
Bremen and Hanover. The attraction had to be for those who were passionate
about escaping into an environment of lush forests and rare moorlands. Add to
that the excellent cuisine character profile established by Executive Chef
Daniel Rundholz and you have a convergence of inescapable qualities that are
the précis of Wachtelhof's
L'auberge
Restaurant. |

As I
sipped the remnants of the Rüdesheimer Riesling the table was cleared and
crumbed and there arrived the artfully prepared Grilled Sea Scallops with
White Wine Risotto and Fresh Green Asparagus. It was arranged over a
wispy-light foamed seafood sauce reduction of concentrated fresh ocean flavors
and topped with a crispy-filigreed Parmesan wafer. |

Dear Friends,
|
|
 |
|
|
Fabulous fall! September is promising to become a big spender. The
kids are back at school and the 'empty nesters' are now occupying the airline
seats. I am truly delighted that our team has recently discovered another still
hidden secret, this time the superior old-world hospitality of Landhaus
Wachtelhof Hotel in the northern part of Germany that we are able to share with
you in this issue. Now is the perfect time to get out and see places and
participate in events you've never experienced before - or revisit the memories
you hold dear. But save a few days in October to attend the Hamptons
International Film Festival in New York, USA or the International Film Festival
in Warsaw, Poland. If you are choosing Poland we highly recommend the Hotel
Rialto for you stay and please taste the 'Foods of the Gods' at Kurt Scheller's
Restaurant in true Steven Stars and Stripes' Style ;). Fast forward to Lake
Geneva, Switzerland: Congratulations to
Peter Knogl, Executive Chef of the Le Mirador Kempinski who
received the Seven Stars and Stripes Award (6 Stars & 6 Stripes) 2005 , the
Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence and most recently 16 of 20 Gault Millau
points.
Very truly yours |

5 Stars and 6 Stripes |

The
Hotel
Rialto was originally a gift from an adoring husband to his wife and it
started out as a four star property and has since raised the bar with
determination and commitment to excellence. Already at the main entrance it
became obvious to me that the 1920's period was flawlessly paired with tasteful
modern amenities. I felt content and confident as I approached the desk: "Serde
- cznie witamy and welcome!" ...
We took the custom-designed 1920's
style elevator with a little bench to sit on (a scent of mahogany in the air)
to the 5th floor and it was delightful. My suite: # 55 - was a sheer
'home-coming' experience. The
Rialto
is still conveniently located within close proximity to most major attractions
and allows upper floor guests a view that reminds one on the famous 'Roofs of
Paris'. |

I
glanced around the darkened room looking for my host that evening as I entered
the
restaurant.
I stood momentarily soaking up the atmosphere produced by theatrical contrasts
of highly polished wood and I visualized an intimate encounter with the likes
of Greta Garbo or Marlene Dietrich. |

 |
|
Under
the watchful eye of Chef Kurt I was escorted through the Variation of Polish
Style Goose Liver as a 'Greeting from the Kitchen' followed by Suwalki
Style Chanterelle Risotto paired with a glass of Chef Kurt Scheller's own wine
from the Lake Garda region of Italy bottled by Pasqua. |
